Welcome to a new school year at Licking Heights High School and to Honors Chemistry.  The goal of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the interaction between matter and energy.  We will be investigating this interaction by using laboratory techniques, conceptual understanding, and problem solving.
In order for everyone to achieve these goals, I have provided the following information so that we can all have an exciting and successful year.

Materials
I find that the most successful students are those that come to class prepared. Make sure that you have all of your required materials each day.  The following is a list of materials that you should bring with you every day:
  • Pen & pencil
  • Three-ring binder
  • Scientific Calculator (The $10 dollar ones are great, you do not need an expensive graphing calculator.  If you already have one, you can use it.)
  • Internet Access to complete online assignments
Classroom Expectations
·         Be prepared
o   Have your binder in class every day.
o   Have your assignments completed BEFORE they are due.
·         Be on time
o   Be in the classroom BEFORE the tardy bell rings.
·         Be respectful
o   My classroom is a safe place of learning.  Treat others as you wish to be treated.
·         Be accountable
o   You are responsible for your OWN work and learning.
·         Be consistent
o   You will continue to follow all of these expectations to the best of your ability throughout our entire time together.
o   Remain in your seat and on task until I dismiss you from class.

Respect
I will give you my respect throughout the school year, and so I expect this to be returned not only to me, but to your fellow students as well.  Always remember that you DO NOT have the right to disrupt another student’s learning or my teaching.  Any behavior that crosses either of these lines will result in loss of participation points, a detention, and/or a phone call home.  Severe behavior issues will be sent directly to the office.

Late Work Policy
All assignments should be completed ON TIME.  I do accept late work, however it will only be accepted for 50% after the initial due-date (unless you have an excused absence).  Assignments not turned in by the due date will be marked as missing in progressbook until they are turned in.  This will alert you that the assignment has not been turned in.  Make sure to keep everything we do in class in your binder.

Absences
If you are absent it is YOUR responsibility to go to get your missing assignments, complete them, and turn them in.  Extra copies of any worksheets will be provided in the appropriate folder in the hanging folders/basket in the classroom.  Each folder is numbered based on the assignment number as shown in progressbook.  Anonymous progress reports will be printed and posted in class often for students to check their scores and get missing assignments.

Assignment Weighted Grading Scale
In order to help prepare students for expectations past high school, the following weighted scale will be used:
·         Tests: 50%
·         ALL other work combined (classwork, homework, labs, projects, quizzes, etc.): 50%

Class Grading Scale
A 93-100%                        A- 90-92%                   B+ 87-89%                  B 83-86%
B- 80-82%                         C+ 77-79%                  C 73-76%                    C- 70-72%
D+ 67-69%                        D 63-66%                    D- 60-62%                   F 0-59%
